Whew….another annual FLA workshop under the belt (our 23rd). Again this year, it was hectic, exciting, beautiful on the Gulf, and truly educational. I think our presenters were top-notch, and the dinner speaker (with the dinner sponsored by the Pinkert Law Firm), Wayne S., had almost 200 people mesmerized with his story of adversity, recovery, and rehabilitation leading to his being the loving and ethical father, partner, and lawyer he is today. For the 13th year in a row at the Naples Beach Resort, the rain stayed over the Gulf for the Saturday morning breakfast, and we had a gorgeous setting for our coffee, eggs, muffins, and fruit. This year we had the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling (who also sponsored the Saturday breakfast) and InTheRooms.com as exhibitors.

The only thing I regret (and this is true every year) is that I don’t get enough time one-on-one with FLA participants. Often, this is the time of year I get to put a face to a voice I’ve talked to on the phone or emailed many times, and I really do wish I could sit down with each of you and get to know you better. Problem is….there’s just too much going on at any one time, and often a quick hello and hug is all I’m able to squeeze in. There’s not a whole lot I can do about it, but I do want you to know it does bother me.

So this week, we’ll all be wandering around the office in the “post conference crash” mode. It takes a great deal of effort of all the FLA staff to put the conference together, and there is a sort of shell-shock each year after it’s all over. I probably won’t have much of a chance to sit back and enjoy the memory….the Tuesday after the workshop, I’m off to the ABA Annual Meeting in Chicago to address the National Association of Bar Executives, then home Wednesday, and over to Naples (what is it with me and west coast these days) on Thursday to speak to the 5th Circuit PD’s conference. After that, it’s time to start thinking of packing up my son’s stuff and getting him over to Sarasota (see…west coast again) to start his first year at New College, then Dawn and I get to pack up for ourselves and head to Maine, where we get to prepare for her daughter’s wedding on the beach in September. I thought summer was supposed to be quiet time!

More to come…………..

It’s been a busy, busy week, which is nothing new for this time of year. Our fiscal year ends on June 30th, our annual board of directors meeting is always the last Friday of July, and our annual workshop is always the last weekend of July in Naples. So I’m kind of used to crunch time being the first couple of weeks of the month, when the annual report has to be completed (it’s on this site under the Literature tab), the year-end financials have to be done, newly appointed directors are welcomed, and the last minute workshop registrations and payments have to be processed. The good news is that after next week, things slow down a bit, although this year Dawn and I will be getting ready for her daughter’s wedding in Maine in September and the annual ABA Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs annual conference (of which I’m the Planning Committee chair) in Phoenix in October.

If you haven’t registered for the Naples workshop, there’s still a few days left to do it, or you can show up and register at the door. Full details are available on this site, and it looks like it’s going to be a great program. Details on the CoLAP conference are available at www.abanet.org/legalservices/colap. Hope to see you one place or the other!

So, heading up to Orlando for the Bar’s annual conference. I sit on the Standing Committee on Professionalism, which has been a real treat for the past three years. Looking around the room at the men and women serving on the Committee and Commission on Professionalism, you get the sense of what the Bar should and could be – dedicated individuals who really want this to be a profession, rather than a trade. Right now, the Commission’s focus is on law schools and hopefully addressing the issues that make us the most stressed, depressed, and addicted profession in the country before they have a chance to really get started. I’ll also get to say hi to people on the bar staff and Board of Governors who strongly support FLA (as well as talk with some who don’t), and thank them for “putting their money where their mouth is”, especially in these tough economic times. More will be revealed……..

We’ve become accutely aware over the past 6-9 months of the severe emotional impact the current economic situation is having on the legal profession. Calls to FLA from attorneys dealing with stress and depression resulting from financial conditions have spiked significantly during that time period, and our Clinical Director, Dr. Weinstein, is dealing with more serious cases (some suicidal) than any of us can remember. Attorneys facing the loss of a position they’ve held for a number of years, or not being able to find work upon admisssion, or seeing their income drop precipitously actually seem to suffer emotional distress to a greater degree than other members of society, due to the fact we’re supposed to be the “strong” ones who help others and don’t show that kind of weakness. Take a look at this article in Adam Smith, Esq. for information.

What can we do about it (other than hope the downturn comes to an end relatively quickly)? Well, lawyer assistance programs around the country are developing support systems to help legal professionals both emotionally and practically. A number of states, such as Oregon and Washington, have produced multi-day workshops to help lawyers work through difficult financial transitions and learn how to weather the storm. FLA and the Florida Bar Center for Professionalism are developing a similar workshop which will hopefully be presented in November 2009. The ABA has taken a very proactive position on helping members of the profession by preparing and making available a number of practice aides, teleconferences, and materials – links to those ABA resources can be found on this site under the Links tab.

Please feel free to comment on this subject with your own experiences, good or bad. Certainly, suggestions on how to deal with the emotional and economic impact of the current recession will be appreciated, and represent the best of “lawyers helping lawyers”.

It’s been a pretty intense month for the staff. We finally (after 12 years!) updated our database – it was the last true DOS program left on our computers and served us well, but we think the new system will allow us to be more responsive to our clients and to the agencies we report to. As you can see, we’ve also updated our web site, which will permit us to develop a Lawyers in the Rooms module for password protected members only, put training videos for our monitors online, and make negotiating the site easier all around. The members only section will have a directory, detailed listings for the FLA meetings, and a chat section, as well as acting as a portal to the main In the Rooms site for those who choose. At the same time, Judy’s been working on finalizing the July workshop in Naples, which this year is July 24-25 (the schedule and registration are on this site) and it looks like another excellent program. Judy, Scott and I will be updating our blogs regularly (we hope) and look forward to your feedback on the new web pages – please feel free to comment.
